Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced that he will be canceling a $100-million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink internet services after U.S. President Donald Trump escalated a trade war.
The contract, signed in November, was intended to bring high-speed internet to remote residents in rural and northern Ontario. (Related: Space war brewing? Russia threatens to destroy Starlink satellites.)
“We’ll be ripping up the province’s contract with Starlink. Ontario won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy,” Ford posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that same day. “President Trump is the only person to be blamed. Maybe Elon Musk can call his buddy? This is one of the ramifications.”
On Feb. 1, Trump imposed a 25 percent tax on imports from Mexico and Canada, while a 10 percent tariff will be levied on Chinese goods. On the other hand, Canadian energy imports will only be subject to a 10 percent tariff. These new tariffs took effect on Tuesday, Feb. 4
“Tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China are SIGNED!” White House spokesperson Harrison Fields posted on X that day. “This bold move holds these countries accountable for stopping illegal immigration and the flow of dangerous drugs like fentanyl.”
Aside from the cancellation of contract with Starlink, Ford also stated that Ontario will no longer use American companies for provincial contracts. He estimates that this decision will cost U.S.-based businesses “tens of billions of dollars” in new revenues.
“We just aren’t going to be using American companies. And no matter if we are building a hospital, if we’re building anything, if we’re building a dog house, I want to make sure we are using Ontario steel, Canadian products, Canadian wood, Ontario wood, anything. I don’t care if it’s a toothpick. We need to purchase from Canada and Ontario,” Ford said.
Ford also announced that Ontario would remove American liquor brands from government store shelves. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario sells nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, spirits and seltzers every year.
“This is a tax on American citizens. That’s what Donald Trump is doing to his own people,” said Ford, while describing Musk as part of the Trump team “that wants to destroy families incomes, destroy businesses. He wants to take food off the table of hard-working people and I’m not going to tolerate it.”
In addition to canceling contracts and removing American products from store shelves, Ford also encouraged businesses to put the Canadian flag on products so Canadians know what to buy. Canada and Mexico even ordered retaliatory tariffs on American goods in response to Trump’s tariffs. Ford has called an election for his province and is seeking a four-year mandate to outlast Trump’s term. “He wants to come after us?” he asked. “I’ve yet to hear one American citizen say Canada is the problem.”
